What Is Food Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)?
Food sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) involves placing a liquid containing a tiny amount of your food allergen under your tongue for a specified period each day. The allergen enters the bloodstream through the mucus membranes in your mouth, where your immune system recognizes it. Food SLIT has been shown to build tolerance, significantly reducing the risk of severe allergic reactions in the event of accidental exposure.
SLIT has been used by allergists to treat allergies to pollen and other airborne particles caused by grasses, weeds, and dust mites. It has gained recognition recently for its incredible potential for treating food allergies, significantly reducing the risk of severe reactions.

How Does Food Sublingual Immunotherapy Work?
Our board-certified food allergist at Safe2Bite will evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and test results to personalize your food sublingual immunotherapy treatments. She will provide you with the first dose at our McKinney, Prosper, Southlake, or Frisco office, where she will monitor you for reactions. We will provide you with drops to use at home as well as use instructions. We will also prescribe a self-injectable epinephrine device in the unlikely event you have a severe allergic reaction.
Depending on your food allergen, we may start with a period of dose escalation, meaning you get a little more of the allergen in every dose over a few weeks or months until you reach full strength. Treatments may occur at our office during this stage.
Once you reach your maintenance dose, you'll need to place your drops under your tongue every day. Make sure to follow the instructions closely for your safety and best possible results. With consistency, many patients experience a significantly reduced risk of severe reactions from accidental exposure.
Who Should Consider Food SLIT?
Food sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) can be ideal for children and adults who have food allergies diagnosed through skin-prick testing, blood tests, or oral food challenges. While it's often a great fit for milder allergies, food SLIT is also frequently recommended for patients experiencing moderate to severe reactions, particularly if traditional oral immunotherapy (OIT) isn't a suitable path for them. Food SLIT has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of future severe responses, allowing you to live with freedom and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions About Food Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)
How is food SLIT different from oral immunotherapy (OIT)?
With OIT, you'll ingest small amounts of your allergen, while food SLIT involves placing drops of the allergenic protein under the tongue. SLIT has a lower risk of anaphylaxis when compared to OIT. Additionally, the outcome desensitization goals vary with each procedure. Your Safe2Bite board certified allergist will help you determine which treatment plan is best for your family.
What food allergies can food SLIT treat?
At Safe2Bite, we offer food SLIT for common food allergens, including peanuts, milk, egg, tree nuts, and sesame. We tailor your treatment plan to address your unique allergy profile and individual health needs.
How long does it take to see results with food SLIT?
Food SLIT is a long-term treatment, and results develop gradually over several months to years. While some patients may notice subtle improvements sooner, significant reductions in reactivity and increased tolerance typically require consistent daily dosing for an extended period.
Can I stop carrying my epinephrine auto-injector after starting food SLIT?
No. Even with successful food sublingual immunotherapy, it's critical to continue carrying your epinephrine auto-injector and maintaining an emergency action plan. While food SLIT aims to reduce the severity of potential reactions, it does not eliminate the risk, so it's essential to remain vigilant and prepared.
