A walnut allergy is one of the most commonly diagnosed tree nut allergies and has the potential to cause serious reactions. At Safe2Bite | Texas Food Allergy Center, board-certified allergist Dr. Mireku has provided expert testing and treatment for a range of food allergies across the DFW area. With more than 15 years of experience, she helps patients and their families understand their walnut allergy triggers and develop a plan for safe and healthy living.

As a mom of children with food allergies, Dr. Mireku welcomes patients of all ages to our food allergy treatment centers. We provide walnut allergy care at locations in McKinney, Prosper, Southlake and Frisco. Each clinic offers personalized treatment plans tailored to your needs.

How Walnut Allergies Develop in Children and Adults

Walnuts are one of the most popular tree nuts in the United States and one of the most common triggers of tree nut allergies. A walnut allergy occurs when the immune system perceives proteins in the nut as a threat, then triggers an immune response. Unlike some food allergies, walnut allergies are rarely outgrown and tend to continue throughout a person’s life.

Reactions to walnuts are most common in early childhood, often occurring before the age of 2. The prevalence of walnuts in many foods and the small amounts that can trigger a response make these allergies difficult for many families to manage.

Due to the severity of reactions experienced by many patients, ongoing walnut allergy management is needed to prevent reactions. Our allergists work with patients to help them understand their triggers as well as any other potentially risky tree nuts that could lead to severe symptoms.

Know the Warning Signs of a
Walnut Allergy

Walnut allergies can cause many different symptoms, from mild irritation to severe reactions like anaphylaxis. If a person is allergic, symptoms show up within minutes after eating walnuts, but sometimes may take 1–2 hours to appear. Recognizing one or more of the following signs early-on helps you respond quickly and get the right diagnosis.

Hives or skin redness.

Itching or tingling mouth.

Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Swollen lips, tongue or throat.

Nasal congestion or runny nose.

Shortness of breath or wheezing.

Dizziness, fainting or drop in blood pressure.

Foods That May Contain Walnuts

Walnuts are used in a variety of sweet and savory foods, adding to the complexity of managing your allergy. If you suspect you or your child have a walnut allergy, know that the most common sources include cookies, brownies, cakes and other baked goods. You will also need to check salads, trail mixes and granola, as they often contain walnuts.

Adding to the confusion for families is the fact that walnuts may appear in less obvious items such as snack bars, sauces, pesto and specialty dishes. When in doubt, we recommend avoiding these products until our allergists have developed a tree nut allergy testing and treatment plan. And remember this—since walnuts are classified as a major food allergen under federal law, it means that manufacturers must clearly list them on ingredient labels.

Walnut Allergy Testing and Diagnosis in DFW

Walnut allergy symptoms can sometimes be confused with other conditions. Patients may also be unsure of the specific food that has triggered a reaction. Food allergy testing gives our allergists the information needed to confirm a diagnosis and map out the right treatment plan.

At Safe2Bite, we offer a range of testing options to evaluate suspected food allergies and monitor their progress after treatment. Test results are considered alongside your symptoms and medical history to build the clearest picture possible of your condition.

Skin Prick Testing

When a walnut allergy is suspected, skin prick testing is usually the starting point. The results tell Dr. Mireku whether the immune system is reacting to walnut proteins based on a skin reaction.

Blood Testing

Blood testing is recommended when skin prick testing is not appropriate—for example, in patients with skin conditions. For this test, a blood sample is used to measure specific IgE antibodies to walnuts.

Oral Food Challenge

An oral food challenge is used to confirm or rule out a walnut allergy after other tests have been performed. The challenge can establish a tolerance threshold and determine whether a patient has outgrown their allergy.

Advanced Treatments for Walnut Allergies

Many people assume that avoiding walnuts is the only way to manage a walnut allergy. However, advances in food allergy care have expanded the available treatment options, including immunotherapy for some patients. At our Safe2Bite food allergy treatment centers, we work with individuals and families to identify the best treatment for their long-term health and well-being.

Oral Immunotherapy Treatment

Oral immunotherapy (OIT) builds immune system tolerance to walnut proteins over several months. By gradually reducing sensitivity to walnuts, patients reduce the risk and severity of accidental exposure reactions. Patients who commit to the OIT process can experience a better quality of life.

Allergy Drops (SLIT)

Sublingual immunotherapy uses drops placed under the tongue to build tolerance to walnut proteins. After beginning treatment at one of our DFW offices, allergy drops can be administered primarily at home, with periodic appointments to monitor progress.

Living Safely With a Walnut Allergy

Food allergy testing can provide answers about your triggers, and treatment may help decrease sensitivity to walnuts. But managing a walnut allergy also involves daily habits and precautions that reduce the risk of accidental exposure. At Safe2Bite, we advise patients and their families on the strategies needed to enjoy a safe and healthy lifestyle.

Reading food labels is an important part of managing a walnut allergy. At restaurants and events, asking about ingredients and food preparation before eating reduces the risk of a reaction. Even foods that seem safe may contain traces of walnut, so always remember to check allergen information.

Dr. Mireku can also provide a walnut allergy treatment plan for day-to-day allergy management and emergency preparedness. For many patients, carrying emergency medication will be a safeguard required in case of anaphylaxis. Copies of an allergy plan and emergency medication instructions can be shared with family members, schools and workplaces.
