Skin Prick Testing
When a walnut allergy is suspected, skin prick testing is usually the starting point. The results tell Dr. Mireku whether the immune system is reacting to walnut proteins based on a skin reaction.
Blood Testing
Blood testing is recommended when skin prick testing is not appropriate—for example, in patients with skin conditions. For this test, a blood sample is used to measure specific IgE antibodies to walnuts.
Oral Food Challenge
An oral food challenge is used to confirm or rule out a walnut allergy after other tests have been performed. The challenge can establish a tolerance threshold and determine whether a patient has outgrown their allergy.
Oral Immunotherapy Treatment
Oral immunotherapy (OIT) builds immune system tolerance to walnut proteins over several months. By gradually reducing sensitivity to walnuts, patients reduce the risk and severity of accidental exposure reactions. Patients who commit to the OIT process can experience a better quality of life.
Allergy Drops (SLIT)
Sublingual immunotherapy uses drops placed under the tongue to build tolerance to walnut proteins. After beginning treatment at one of our DFW offices, allergy drops can be administered primarily at home, with periodic appointments to monitor progress.
