What Happens During a Seed Allergy Reaction?

A seed allergy is an adverse reaction to exposure to proteins in certain seeds, most commonly sesame, sunflower, mustard, poppy or flaxseed. But how do seed allergies develop? Seed allergies occur when the body's immune system mistakenly identifies proteins in specific seeds as harmful. Future exposure to even the smallest amounts of these proteins can trigger reactions that can range from mild to severe and may even be life-threatening.

Could These Symptoms Be Caused by a
Seed Allergy?

Shortly after eating seeds, you or your child may experience a series of uncomfortable symptoms. A review of these symptoms, along with skin prick or blood testing for food allergies, can help an allergist diagnose a seed allergy. Mild to moderate symptoms may include one or a combination of the following.

Hives, welts or skin rashes.

Swelling of the lips, face, tongue or eyes.

Tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth or throat.

Stomach pain, nausea or vomiting.

Tightening of the throat.

Paleness and lethargy.

Difficulty breathing.

Dizziness or fainting.

How Severe Can Seed Allergy Reactions Become?

Seed allergies can sometimes cause severe, potentially life-threatening reactions, including anaphylaxis, especially when it comes to sesame or mustard seeds. This can lead to swelling of the throat, constriction of the airway and a rapid drop in blood pressure. The severity of an allergic reaction can vary, so a mild response doesn’t necessarily mean that it will not be a more severe one in the future. It’s also important to keep in mind that if you have a seed allergy, you are at a higher risk of developing other food allergies, such as peanut or tree nut allergies.

Cross-contamination is another risk when foods are prepared in facilities or restaurants that handle seeds, even if the seed is not a direct ingredient. If you decide to dine out, call ahead of time and speak with the chef or manager. Most restaurants are accommodating and will ensure safe handling. Our team at Safe2Bite is happy to offer personalized tips and guidance to help you minimize the risks of seed allergies.

What Methods Are Used to Diagnose Seed Allergies?

Seed and sesame allergy testing in North Texas may include the following.

Skin Prick Testing (SPT)

This relatively quick test involves placing small amounts of different seed extracts on the skin and gently pricking the surface. Raised or itchy bumps surrounded by redness may indicate a potential seed allergy.

Specific IgE Antibody Testing

This blood test measures the level of seed-specific IgE antibodies present in the blood. Elevated levels may suggest immune system sensitization, which may trigger allergic reactions upon future exposure.

Oral Food Challenge (OFC)

This is the gold standard for diagnosing food allergies, including seed allergies. It involves ingesting gradually increasing amounts of the suspected seed under strict medical supervision to monitor for signs of allergic reactions.

What Can Patients Expect From Seed Allergy Treatment?

At Safe2Bite, we create personalized seed allergy treatments for children and adults based on their unique healthcare and lifestyle needs. The following are some of the treatment options we offer.

Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)

Oral immunotherapy involves introducing tiny, controlled amounts of seed protein into your or your child's diet under strict supervision by our team. The goal is to desensitize the immune system over time, increasing the threshold for reaction and reducing the risk of severe allergic responses.

Food Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

By administering small, controlled doses of seed protein under the tongue, where they are absorbed into the bloodstream, food sublingual immunotherapy helps build seed tolerance gradually over time. This helps lower the possibility of severe allergic reactions in the future.

How Can You Manage Seed Allergies Safely?

It’s important to avoid products that may contain seeds, including breads, sesame oil, granola products, margarine, cereal, vegetable burgers, sunflower oil and more. Make sure to read the labels of all the foods you consume to ensure they are free from potential allergens. Also, be careful when it comes to vegetable oils, many of which come from seeds. Instead, opt for butter or olive oil when preparing meals.

When it comes to severe allergic reactions to seeds, it’s essential to have a plan in place. Our board-certified allergist and team at Safe2Bite will work alongside you to outline steps to manage your food allergies.

Note: If you have a history of severe allergic reactions to edible seeds, make sure to carry an epinephrine auto-injector at all times. In the event of an emergency, call 911 for immediate assistance.
