Our offices, located in McKinney, Prosper, Southlake, and Frisco, proudly serve families from across DFW and the broader North Texas region who seek expert food allergy diagnosis and care.

What is an Oral Food Challenge?

An oral food challenge, or OFC, is a very accurate test that can help confirm or rule out a food allergy. Our board-certified allergist will supervise you while you consume small, gradually increasing amounts of the suspected allergen to determine whether you have an allergic reaction.

Unlike skin prick or blood tests, which measure allergic sensitization, an oral food challenge evaluates your or your child's actual response to a food. This makes it the gold standard for food allergy care.

Who Needs an Oral Food Challenge?

Our food allergy specialist may recommend an oral food challenge if you or your child has had blood or skin prick testing with inconclusive results. This test can bring more clarity and a definitive diagnosis, helping determine the best course of action.

Oral food challenges are also helpful in determining how well a treatment is working or whether your child has outgrown a food allergy, which is common with milk or egg allergies. Our board-certified allergist will help you determine if an oral food challenge is right for you.

How We Ensure Your Safety During Testing

Most people experience mild reactions during the testing process. Our food allergy specialist and team at Safe2Bite will monitor you closely and intervene in the unlikely event of a more severe reaction. We have all the necessary emergency equipment and medication readily available to ensure your safety.

What to Expect During an Oral Food Challenge

The procedure involves introducing tiny amounts of the suspected food allergen to determine your response. With each dose, our board-certified allergist will observe you for a period of time for signs of reactions. If you show no symptoms, you will receive larger doses until we can reach a definitive diagnosis.

If no symptoms appear by the end of the oral food challenge, it is a confirmation that you or your child is not allergic to that food or may have outgrown the allergy.

If, however, your test confirms a food allergy, we are happy to create a personalized plan outlining how to live safely and reduce the risk of severe allergic reactions in the future.
