Food Allergies and the Importance of Professional Treatment

A food allergy is an adverse response that occurs soon after consuming certain foods, such as shellfish, peanuts, milk or sesame seeds. It all starts with the body's immune system mistakenly identifying proteins in specific foods as harmful. Future exposure to even the tiniest amounts of these proteins can trigger reactions that can range from mild to severe and may even be life-threatening.

Food allergy testing is the first stage in understanding which foods are triggering reactions, and how severe the sensitivity is. Reactions are unpredictable for many patients, and can worsen with repeated exposure to the allergen. Starting with an accurate diagnosis from Safe2Bite, we can identify the right treatment path for you and your family.

Treatment Paths Available at Safe2Bite

Food allergen avoidance is important to prevent serious allergic responses. However, we often recommend dietary and lifestyle changes combined with innovative treatment options, such as immunotherapy.

Single-Food Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)

Single-food OIT is designed to reduce sensitivity to a specific food. It involves ingesting tiny, gradually increasing amounts of the allergen under the strict supervision of our food allergy specialist and team. Our goal is to desensitize the immune system and build tolerance over time, lowering the risk of severe reactions in the future.

Multi-Food Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)

Multi-food OIT is similar to single-food OIT, except it is designed to target multiple food allergies in a single treatment. You will ingest small, increasing doses of several allergenic foods under the supervision of our food allergy specialist and team. Once again, our goal is to build tolerance and lower your risk of severe reactions should you accidentally be exposed to allergens.

Food Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

This treatment involves placing small doses of the allergen extract under your tongue. The aim is to gradually increase your tolerance to food allergens. SLIT has proven to dramatically reduce the chances of severe allergic reactions down the road.
