Living with a food allergy can impact your health and daily life. Whether you or your child are looking for solutions for a peanut, milk, or shellfish allergy, our board-certified food allergy specialist and dedicated team at Safe2Bite | Texas Food Allergy Center are here to help. We are pleased to offer single-food oral immunotherapy (OIT) to build tolerance to specific food allergens and lower your risk of severe reactions down the road.

Our offices, located in McKinney, Prosper, Southlake, and Frisco, proudly serve families from across DFW and the broader North Texas region who seek expert food allergy treatment and care.

What is a Food Allergy?

A food allergy begins when the immune system mistakenly identifies proteins in foods, such as peanuts, shellfish, and sesame seeds, as harmful, triggering an immune response. Exposure to these allergens once again can cause reactions that range from mild to severe and can be life-threatening in some cases without immediate care.

What Is Single-Food Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)?

Single-food oral immunotherapy (OIT) involves ingesting increased doses of a single food allergen under the strict supervision of our food allergy specialist and team. With repeated exposure, the immune system becomes desensitized or more tolerant to the food in question. This helps make future reactions in response to accidental exposure less likely or less severe.

Who Is Eligible for OIT?

Candidates for single-food OIT are children or adults with a diagnosis of a food allergy using one or a combination of tests, including skin prick testing, blood testing, and oral food challenges. OIT is especially helpful for families wanting more safety and peace of mind when eating out, on vacation, or at school or daycare. Our board-certified food allergist will evaluate your unique needs and help you determine whether OIT is right for you.

How Does The Treatment Work?

Your single-food OIT starts by providing you with a tiny dose of the allergen at our McKinney, Prosper, Southlake, or Frisco clinic, where we'll monitor any reactions. Over the following months, we will provide you with a series of carefully increased doses, each administered under strict medical supervision.

After reaching your target dose begins the maintenance phase of treatment. We will provide you with customized doses of the allergen to take at home every day to maintain your new tolerance level. Our team at Safe2Bite will stay in close contact with you throughout treatment, and we'll see you periodically to monitor your progress. We will make any needed adjustments to your treatment plan to ensure its long-term success.

Does OIT Cure Food Allergies

Oral immunotherapy is not considered a cure for food allergies. However, it can significantly reduce the risk of future allergic reactions and their severity in most cases. Patients can lead more relaxed lives knowing that accidentally ingesting small amounts of the allergen is less likely to trigger a life-threatening response. It's important to note that, like any long-term treatment, consistency and follow-up care are critical to the treatment's success.
