Food Allergy vs. Intolerance: What’s the Difference?

Dairy and nuts showing symptoms of food allergy vs food intolerance differences

Food can be comforting and delicious. Food can bring together friends and family for a warm, fun-filled experience. So true, unless you or a loved one experiences a food allergy or intolerance. While both can lead to adverse reactions that can leave you feeling miserable, a food allergy can be life-threatening in some cases. Our board-certified food allergist and team at Safe2Bite | Texas Food Allergy Center offer personalized food allergy testing, treatment, and management to help you live safely and confidently.

The question is, do you have a true allergy, or are your symptoms the result of food intolerance?

What Is a Food Allergy?

A food allergy is an immune system response that occurs after consuming certain foods, such as peanuts, milk, eggs, seeds, tree nuts, and shellfish. It develops as a result of the body mistakenly identifying proteins in these foods as harmful, leading to adverse symptoms.

Food allergy symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening, and may include the following:

  • Hives, welts, rashes, or itchy skin
  • An itchy or tingly feeling in the mouth, throat, or ears
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Having trouble breathing, wheezing, or a cough that persists
  • Swelling of the tongue or throat that makes it hard to breathe
  • Feeling faint, tired, lethargic, or dizzy
  • A fast heartbeat or losing consciousness

When it comes to severe allergies, consuming even the tiniest amounts of an allergen can cause a potentially life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. If you have a known food allergy, it’s important to keep an epinephrine auto-injector with you at all times, which can be life-saving in the event of accidental exposure.

What Is Food Intolerance?

Unlike food allergies that involve an immune system response, a food intolerance results from the digestive system’s inability to properly process a food or one of its components, often due to an enzyme deficiency, as with lactose intolerance, or due to sensitivity to a natural chemical. Intolerance symptoms are generally confined to the gut and are dose-dependent, meaning the more of a food you consume, the worse you feel. While often miserable, food intolerances are not life-threatening.

Food intolerance symptoms may include the following:

  • Stomach cramps, bloating, or gas
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Nausea and occasionally vomiting
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Chronic fatigue or feeling tired after meals
  • Skin rashes, hives, or flushing
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • A runny nose or congestion
