Hazelnut Allergies in Children and Adults

Hazelnuts are a common type of tree nut found in a range of foods including snacks, desserts, sauces and beverages. Individuals with a hazelnut allergy experience reactions when the immune system identifies hazelnut proteins as harmful. These reactions can affect people of all ages, and can vary from mild to life-threatening.

For a person with a hazelnut allergy, symptoms occur when the body releases chemicals such as histamine in response to a perceived threat. It only takes a small amount of hazelnut to trigger a reaction, and in some cases, trace amounts through cross-contact may be enough to cause a response.

Hazelnut allergies often begin in early childhood, with many children being diagnosed as toddlers when they first try new foods. Hazelnut allergies can, however, develop in older children and even in adults who previously ate hazelnuts without an issue. With the support of a tree nut allergy specialist, families can manage symptoms and reduce the risk of severe reactions.

What Are the Hazelnut Allergy Symptoms
You Should Know?

Symptoms typically occur within a few minutes of eating hazelnuts, though they can take up to two hours to appear. Some people will experience a mild reaction that passes quickly, while others may develop severe symptoms, including anaphylaxis. Knowing the signs of an allergic reaction to hazelnuts enables a faster response and the immediate use of emergency medication (if needed). Parents should also be aware that hazelnut reactions can vary depending on the specific protein involved, and that symptoms may differ between children and adults. Such signs include the following symptoms.

Tingling or itching after eating.

Red, itchy skin reactions.

Lips, tongue or throat swelling.

Nausea, cramps or vomiting.

Sneezing, congestion or runny nose.

Wheezing, coughing or shortness of breath.

Severe reaction requiring emergency care.

Foods and Products That May Contain Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts are found in a variety of food and drink products, including many processed foods. For families managing an allergy, being aware of potential sources and risks is key to staying safe. Common sources of hazelnuts include chocolate spreads such as Nutella, chocolate candies, baked goods, pastries and desserts.

Many people are surprised to find hazelnuts appearing in less obvious products, like coffee flavorings, cereals, granola, ice cream and cooking oils. While hazelnuts may not always be a primary ingredient, it only takes a trace amount to trigger a reaction in sensitive people.

Avoiding exposure to hazelnuts is possible, but it involves reading ingredient labels closely, and asking about allergens when eating at restaurants, events and even children’s parties. Building these habits into your family’s routine makes it easier to avoid accidental exposure. Families should also be aware of cross‑reactivity with birch pollen, which may cause oral allergy syndrome (OAS) in some patients.

Testing and Diagnosis for Hazelnut Allergies

Food allergy testing and diagnosis make up the first stage of managing a hazelnut allergy. Before we can provide treatment, it is vital to first confirm the allergens that are triggering symptoms. Testing also helps rule out other potential food allergies or conditions that can share similar symptoms.

Multiple tests are available to diagnose hazelnut allergies, though no single test is used on its own. To ensure an accurate diagnosis, we combine test results with the assessment of a patient’s reported symptoms and apparent allergic reactions, plus their medical history. Here are the common tests we use at our DFW food allergy treatment centers.

Skin Prick Testing

Skin prick testing is a simple method where we place allergens on your arm or back, gently prick the skin, and watch for a reaction. You will usually get results within minutes, all in one visit.

Blood Testing

When skin prick testing may not be appropriate, a blood sample is taken and sent for laboratory analysis. This test measures IgE antibodies associated with allergic responses.

Oral Food Challenges

The oral food challenge is a reliable way to evaluate a food allergy under medical supervision. During an oral food challenge, patients consume carefully measured amounts of the suspected allergen to see how they respond.

Build Tolerance With Hazelnut Allergy Treatment

Our hazelnut allergy treatments help patients reduce the risk of allergic reactions and improve their quality of life. Treatment plans include guidance on managing symptoms, how to reduce exposure, plus the use of advanced therapies to desensitize the immune system to hazelnut proteins over time. Safe2Bite offers the following treatment options to help patients build long-term tolerance.

Oral Immunotherapy Treatment

Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is a desensitization treatment that involves consuming gradually increasing doses of an allergen at one of our North Texas food allergy treatment centers. As the immune system becomes more tolerant of hazelnuts, the risk of a severe reaction to accidental exposure will decrease.

Food Sublingual Immunotherapy

Food sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) involves placing small amounts of an allergen under the tongue. Patients take daily allergy drops at home to desensitize the immune system to hazelnut proteins. SLIT is suitable for most patients, including many young children.

How Families Can Manage a Hazelnut Allergy

Living with a hazelnut allergy affects the whole family. As a parent of children with food allergies herself, Dr. Mireku understands the daily challenges families face, and knows how to communicate with both parents and children. Helping the whole family understand the allergy ensures that everyone can recognize the risks and symptoms.

Beyond the immediate family, it’s also important to inform teachers, child care providers, and anyone else who could benefit from guidance. Access to a hazelnut allergy action plan is vital for an emergency situation. Additionally, encouraging children to speak up about their allergy can help build confidence as they continue to grow.

However, even with careful planning, accidental allergen exposure is always possible. After a visit to Safe2Bite, you will understand how to recognize the early signs of a reaction and understand the steps to take in an emergency. We can also provide emergency medication for those at risk.
